spider eyes magnified
I've got my eyes on you, Jack

It's amazing that spiders can eat animals bigger than themselves...

A common perception is that spiders like to eat flies that have been silly enough to fly into their webs and traps. This is all true but you can add that moths and other flying insects like butterflies also make up part of a healthy spider diet.

The truth is that spiders will eat just about anything their 8 legs can grab onto.

Here's some cool pictures of what some spiders have been caught eating, including the odd lizard, worm and even a bird!

Damn freaks!

Right?

We'll start our run with an early spider gets the worm joke: yep, this spider is munching down on a juicy worm. How do I know worms are juicy? I got paid a dollar once by my brother to eat one.

Sucker!

I would have done it for 50 cents!

Now we have the classic tarantula spider eating a dead chicken picture.

I'd be surprised if this huge spider managed to bring down the chicken all by himself but none-the-less, it's a spider eating a chicken shot! I hope it's not a staged photo...

You'd think lizards and geckos would be faster than a spider right? Not so in these two pictures.

The picture below appears to be showing a spider carrying a lizard up a door or a window. Kind of reminds me of this python pulling up a kangaroo actually! Either way, that's a strong spider.

Now this is where our what do spiders eat photo essay gets a little weird...

Can you imagine a spider eating a snake? Can you imagine a Spider reading the meaning of U2's One song lyrics?

Well, it looks like this little fella managed to capture a grass snake of some kind in his web and made him a snack.

Hey Jimmy Jangles, that's only a little snake! It hardly counts! Okay then dear reader, how about a bigger snake being eaten by a spider? That image does kind of look like a set up though eh?

In the spider kingdom there's one spider that everyone knows the name of: Taranatula! And here's a picture of one eating a small mouse.

So far we've had the spiders eating the worms, spiders, mice and and the odd chicken, but I've saved my favorite picture till last. Spider eating a bird. It's my favorite because that is one big bird and that is one mean looking spider. And that bird must have put up a decent fight right? So imagine how tough the spider is!

Cats eating rats and mice!

I wonder what mouse pate would taste like?
So my wife and I got a new cat.

She's a lovely stray and we call her Venus. Yes, Venus rythmes with Doremius.

Venus was a stray from the SPCA and appeared to be a very nervous cat. However on her second night of staying with us she decided she loved us and chose to demonstrate that love by placing a mouse at the foot of the bed.

We think she's a keeper and for her mouse catching prowess, this page of cats eating rats and mice is dedicated to her.

Could I get some sauce for this mouse please?

Never give up: Epic Eel chestburster escape!

Thursday, November 5, 2020

I think this eel's escape plan may have been inspired by a certain chest-burster scene from Alien - where the Xenomorph escapes across the table....

You'd think this would be the end of the day right? The bird would have plummeted from the sky?

Nope:

Meet the gargantuan carpet python that likes to eat possums

Tuesday, May 12, 2020
Meet the gargantuan carpet python from Mooloolaba, Australia that likes to eat whole possums, just casually in someone's back yard. Given the snake is on the roof of the house, we guess it slowly snuck down on to an unsuspecting possum on the ground.

Hey Crocodile, you want a zebra for lunch?

Crocodile capturing a zebra in a river then eating it

When one thinks of a zebra being eating, I would normally think of a Lion feeding on one but when you think about it, Zebras need to drink and when the sun beats down you'd be forgiven for tempting fate for trying to have a drink in quiet down the local watering hole...

crocodile attacking a zebra

The Daily Telegraph said of this Reuters photo "the stricken animal was attempting to cross the Mara river in the Masai Mara game reserve in south-western Kenya when the reptile struck.

And the poor zebra's chances did not look very good as two of the croc's hungry friends lurked menacingly in front of it as well." Stricken Animal?

I say the Zebra was freaking lunch meat!

Here's some more pictures of other occasions where some hungry crocs have got themselves some fresh Zebra.

Here's some more crocs having an orgy over this Zebra platter. Good eating boys! I heard afterward they watched Star Wars movies in chronological order! How crazy!

Crocodiles have also been known to eat sharks but also sometimes suffer the misfortune of being eaten by a leopard... but if you want to have a laugh, check out this crocodile with a vet's arm hanging out his mouth!

Pictures of Eagles capturing their prey

Eagles are large birds of prey which are members of the bird family Accipitridae, and belong to several genera which are not necessarily closely related to each other. Most of the more than 60 species occur in Eurasia and Africa.

Outside this area, just two species (the Bald and Golden Eagles) can be found in the USA and Canada, nine more in Central and South America, and three in Australia.

Eagles are differentiated from many other birds of prey mainly by their larger size, more powerful build, and heavier head and beak. Even the smallest eagles, like the Booted Eagle (which is comparable in size to a Common Buzzard or Red-tailed Hawk), have relatively longer and more evenly broad wings, and more direct, faster flight. Most eagles are larger than any other raptors apart from the vultures.

Species named as eagles can range in size from the South Nicobar Serpent-eagle, at 500 grams (1.1 pounds) and 40 cm (16 in), to the 6.7-kg Steller's Sea Eagle and the 100 cm (39 in) Philippine Eagle.

Like all strong birds of prey, eagles have very large powerful hooked beaks for tearing the flesh from their prey, strong muscular legs, and powerful talons.

They also have extremely keen eyesight which enables them to spot potential prey from a very long distance above.

This keen eyesight is primarily contributed by their extremely large pupils which ensure minimal diffraction (scattering) of the incoming light.

Hence the expression, "eagle eyed".

Is this prey a rabbit?

Either way it shows you how fast an Eagle can swoop down and catch a prey that is bigger in mass with four legs! Run Rabbit Run!

A rabbit you say?

Heck, my blind grandmother could catch one of those. Ok then, jackass, how about a fox?

You ever seen an eagle catch a cunning fox? You have now:

It's good for all kinds of applications such as testing water & wort. Eagles probably don't use campden tablets for making cider out of apples either!

dead lizard eaten by ants
Face off!
Found on Reddit, this is a great shot of ants finding a dead lizard and doing what they do best. They are taking it right down to the skelton.

Brutal.

Are you curious as to how the Lizard ended up in that final position! It's probably due to the 'clinging' properties of the toes still being in play. This is known as Van Der Walls Force, and lizard and gecko climb everywhere using it.

Check out some lizard eating insects.

Huntsman spider eating a pygmy possum

Tuesday, June 18, 2019

Doing the rounds virally at the moment is these pictures of a hungry Huntsman spider eating a  pygmy possum!

Found in a Mt Field Ski lodge in Tasmania, Australia.

Basically, the possum is the size of a large mouse.

There are many kinds of Huntsman Spiders, they are found all around the world and are so named for their speed and mode of hunting.

This photo reminds of that time this giant orb weaver caught a bird...

Hippopotamus about to snap an alligator in half

Thursday, April 4, 2019
It was when I saw the movie Congo that I realized how dangerous hippos can be.

They were not some cute characters in the Hungry Hungry Hippos game, no, they are strong beasts who rule their river domain with brutal efficiency.

So, you can imagine what's about to go down with this alligator caught in the jaws of this big beast:

We have of course seen hippos eat crocodiles before though seeing this zebra do some dental cleaning on one was the cutest thing!

Fox gets skunked

Not the fantastic Mr Fox.
A clever skunk blasts a predatory fox in the face with his scent.

Amateur photographer Jocelyn Rastel Lafond was luckily enough to capture the failed attack by the fox on camera in Lavaltrie near Montreal, Canada.

Lafond said the fox had "such a ridiculous expression after getting sprayed".

It's a double fail for the hungry fox as he lost his lunch too! These foxes had a bit more luck though!

Funnily enough, when beer gets too much exposure to light, the beer is said to have been skunked.

Eagle v. Seagull: A valiant rescue attempt

Thursday, August 16, 2018
seagul tries to rescue another from an eagle mid flight

You got to admire the spirit of this seagull trying to rescue its friend from the death grip of this eagle.

It looks almost comical but nature is showing the brutal reality of the strength of an eagle.

Those sharp talons are locked into that bird and there's little chance the rescue attempt was successful, but we admire the heart shown.

Praying Mantis eating a humming bird

Friday, May 18, 2018

You may have heard of how praying mantis are such bad assess.

After sex the female will eat the male.

Well here's one picture that truly surprised us, a mantis eating a humming bird. Yes, a fricking bird ! They usually only eat things like crickets.

We've seen spiders eat birds before but this is one legendary picture! I'd love to know how this insect caught it's prey! So I actually read the comments on reddit (I know, I do deserve a medal) and found this hypothesis as to how the green goblin did the deed:

"So hummingbirds are impressive as fuck, what with their ability to beat their wings eighty trillion times per second. They can hover, move forwards, backwards, up and down and side to side. They're also FAST. However, the praying mantis is hanging from what looks to be a hummingbird feeder, and that's the one place that they're likely to land. So my guess is that the praying mantis went all double-O ninja on her ass when she went down to get a snack."

These insects are more bad ass than a quote by Darth Vader!
